An international airport in Hai Duong Thursday, Jan 8 2009

Experts have suggested building an international airport in the northern province of Hai Duong which can serve 40-50mil passengers a year.

The participants at the workshop on urban development programming which took place recently in Hai Duong Province, all came to the conclusion that it was necessary to build up an international airport more in the north of the country, which will give an impetus to the development of the local economy.

According to Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Ba, Chairman of the Vietnam Urban Development Programming Association, Vietnam has many airports already, but they just play important roles in the economic development in their localities.  An international airport with the capacity of 40-50mil passengers a year will have much more importance to the national economy.

Mr Ba added that nearly all investors he met expressed their readiness to make investments in the northern part of the country if there is a big international airport.

The idea by the urban development programmers has been applauded by aviation experts. According to Colonel Pham Vu Nghi, former Head of the Institute for Airport and Aviation Works Designing, said that the existing Noi Bai airport, though it has been expanded several times, cannot meet the requirements of a high-class international airport.

Noi Bai airport should be used as a reserve airport only, and it is just the airport of a city, while he said that the international airport will be the centre of the Hanoi – Hai Phong – Quang Ninh economic triangle.

Mr Nghi said that the international airport has to serve 60-80mil passengers a year, cover an area of 3-4,000 ha and have an estimated investment capital of $4-5bil.

Mr Ba said that now was the right time to programme the setting up of such an international airport, because it will take some 15 years to put an airport into operation. It would be better if the airport becomes operational in 2020, when Vietnam becomes an industrially developed country with increased demand for passenger and goods transport, and for economic development.

Mr Nghi shared the same idea on the time to put the airport into operation, adding that by 2015-2020, the existing Noi Bai airport will be overloaded.

Prof. Dr. Lam Quang Cuong from the Hanoi Construction University also said that the big cities with more than 2mil people, like Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Seoul, all have one or two international airports. The airports must not be near to the cities’ centres, they may be 40-75 km from the cities’ centres.

The participants said that Hai Duong province proved to be the most suitable location for setting up the international airport, as it is located in the centre of the Hanoi – Hai Phong – Quang Ninh economic triangle.

PM tours of northern Hai Duong province Thursday, Jan 8 2009

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on August 30 urged northern Hai Duong province to fully tap its potentials in industry, service and agriculture for sustainable and strong economic development.

The government leader was on a working visit to Hanoi’s neighbouring Hai Duong province which is part of the northern key economic region.

Talking with the local authorities, PM Dung praised the province’s recent economic achievements, including a GDP growth rate of 11 percent in the first eight months of 2008.

In the reviewed time, Hai Duong recorded year-on-year increases of 20.5 percent in industrial production value, 23.5 percent in service, and 67.2 percent in export turnover.

The province has attracted 188 foreign-invested projects valued at 2.1 billion USD in its 10 industrial zones.

It has made a considerable face-lift in both urban and rural areas, with the poverty rate reduced to 13.4 percent.

The PM advised Hai Duong province to take advantages in services, human resource and transport to accelerate its development, urging the local administration to turn bare hills into industrial zones and zones for high-quality and safe agricultural production.

He also asked the local authorities to take drastic solutions to bolster poverty reduction, family planning, environmental pollution and human resource training.

Hai Duong defeat Bai Bang reach tournament semi-finals Thursday, Jan 8 2009

Lalima Hai Duong beat Bai Bang Paper Mill 3-0 to reach the semi-finals of the annual Women’s Top Volleyball Clubs Tournament yesterday.

Hai Duong dominated the match from the start, leading 25-21 in the first set.

The team, who have contracted Thai player Jutharat for this year’s championship, held a strong defence against the powerful attackers of Bai Bang, and Jutharat scored most of the points in the second set.

Bai Bang sustained their tactic to narrow the score when Hai Duong were leading 10-6.

The set was coming to a draw at one point when Bai Bang was on 20-19, but the team lost their co-ordination which gave Hai Duong the chance to increase their gap and defeat them 25-22.

Hai Duong kept the momentum to score 25-13 in the third set thanks to using good side attacks and a strong performance by Jutharat.

Hai Duong will compete against the Military Signal Corps-Trust Bank, who beat Bao Long Ha Tay 3-0, in the semi-final today.

The annual Women’s Top Volleyball Clubs Tournament has drawn eight high-ranking teams, including the Military Signal Corp-Trust Bank, Bai Bang Paper Mill, Industrial and Commercial Bank (Incombank).

The tournament will also provide a chance for women to warm up before playing at the National Top Volleyball Clubs Championship next month.

The winning team will receive a bonus of VND50mil (US$3,100), while the two runners-up will get VND30mil ($1,800) and VND15mil ($900), respectively.

The organisers will also present eight performance awards to individual players.

It will be the first time since 1998 that Thanh Hoa fans will have the chance to welcome a qualifying volleyball championship team to their home town.
